STRUGGLING TO BLOG

Sadly, posting my blog every morning takes a while for an old boy like myself so I've decided to suspend blogging for a while from the end of this week. In order to put the Bismarck on my post I need to write this in the mornings & there is just not enough time to fit everything in.
Over the weekend there were two family days, Kempton & Fontwell. There were clowns, face painters etc, etc. There were good crowds at both but Fontwell was the more successful. At Kempton the bookmakers dropped out like flies (myself included) as no one was betting. I had a good day at Fontwell which is not one of my favourite courses.

The week is going OK so far apart from Frankie winning on the Bismarck yesterday. He led by 3 lengths all the way. It's about time he retired or stopped riding my Bismarck's! To-days Bismarck is Fashion Rocks in the 4.10 at . Look out for Vive les Rouge in the same race. it was very impressive last time out at Lingfield.

The Bismarck was correct yesterday, maybe that's the start of a roll. To-days Bismarck is Echo of Light in the 3.35 at York.
The talk amongst on course bookmakers is the fact we are being shafted by the new gambling commission rules. They want on course bookmakers pay more to bet & many feel that they can't afford it & that they shouldn't have to pay more than they do already.

TUESDAY

It's Tuesday & all is quiet. My son Danny is off on his holidays to-morrow so the firm will be a man down for the next week. Means I will have to work harder. Yesterday was a surprisingly good meeting at Lingfield. Only 6 of the potential 30 bookmakers turned up. Maybe that has something to do with the new gambling commission rules for bookmakers. Now when I turn up at the track I have to produce my passport or driving licence every time to prove who I am! Some rules are obviously done to the letter.
The Bismarck was correct yesterday. To-days Bismarck is Dunelight in the 3.45 atGoodwood.

SCHOOL IS BACK

It's Monday morning & the schools are back. That means more traffic on the road. Marian is busy doing the school run for the grand kids. A word of advice having children means that when you think you are finished doing school runs, dropping & collecting in general you then have to do it all again as a grandparent! No rest at all!
Yesterday I was at Folkestone. It was a family day & the sun shone. The course was full of Sunday outing people having their 50p each way bets. Nevertheless I won so things weren't too bad.
Congratulations to my son Joseph. Over the weekend he went to Monaco & took part in an Iron Man Race, 2km swim, 50km bike ride followed by a marathon run. He finished in a time of 5hrs 40 mins. He qualified for the World final in Miami next year, so well done to him.

TOP JOCKEYS READ MY BLOG

Top jockeys must read my blog. Yesterday in the car park at Kempton I parked next to Jimmy Quinn & Ryan Moore, Jimmy said that he would have £100 At 33-1 for Ryan Moore to be champ. I said that while I predicted that result I was not laying it.

NEW ROOF GOING WELL

This morning I have been on my roof. Marian made the workmen their morning tea & the young boy literally ran up the ladders balancing the tea tray in one hand like a waiter. So I thought I'd go & have a look at the progress. Big mistake. at 68 ladder climbing is not that easy. Anyway I made it to the top of two flights of ladders & then came the tricky part going over to take a look. The view was worth it I saw all around from a different perspective but getting down was another matter. I will be leaving roof inspections to Marian in future!
Apologies for the spelling mistakes yesterday, was in a rush & no time for spellchecker.
I see that Ryan Moore is talked up in all the papers at the moment, maybe they are reading my blog & taking notice of me.
The Bismarck got beaten yesterday. To-days Bismarck is Edge Closer in the 5.10 at Kempton.

SUNNY AT LAST

At last Summer is here, it's lovely to wake up to good weather all week I'd been thinking that winter had arrived.
Here is a little anecdote from York for you. Two racing correspondents (who shall remain nameless) from two top newspapers were having dinner in the hotel at York happily drinking the £17.50 house wine. John Magnier & Michael Tabor were on a table nearby & kindly sent them over a bottle of very nice wine which they graciously drunk then another bottle was sent over. It was only afterwards when they were perusing the wine list that they discovered that gifted wine was £2,200 a bottle. Now they are frightened to report to their respective editors that they drank nearly £5,000 worth of wine! How would it look in the papers! I leave it to your imagination to work out who it was.
Anyway the Bismarck was correct yesterday for a change. To-days Bismarck is Ivy Cheek in the 2.05 at Goodwood.
Day off to-morrow so back here on Monday.

GLAD THAT YORK IS OVER

I am glad that York is over otherwise I would be well & truly skint. Yesterday was another disaster for the bookmakers. The punters hit back with a vengeance. I was speaking to the Lump OF Lard on the phone this morning & he says it's about time that punters had it in their favour & was delighted to hear that I was suffering. I suppose bookies have had it their way in the other festival meetings. Royal Ascot & Goodwood were good now the tables have turned. To-day I'm having a relaxing day in the betting shop, I can't afford to go anywhere else!
The Bismarck is out of favour also winning again yesterday. When you're out of form you're well & truly OUT.
Anyway to-days Bismarck is Fringe in the 2.50 at Newbury for the reason its better on the All weather than the grass.

A TERRIBLE DAY

Yesterday was a terrible day for bookmakers up & down the country. My colleagues at York suffered badly. The results in general were bad. Punters must be laughing. everything won that I thought was going to lose. All the favourites won. If they keep winning all bookmakers will be out of business soon. They reckon it cost 10 million across the board yesterday. So folks the cupboard at home is bare so get betting or send a food parcel!
Folkestone was also a washout. Even my ski suit couldn't keep out the cold. Terrible rain, darkness & no punters. I suppose everyone was at home watching England perform poorly for a change.
My Bismarck won yesterday so to-day I'm going to take a chance on Dark Angel in the 1.35 at York.Last time out it won on good to firm ground. I don't know if it will handle to-days going.

WINTER IS HERE

Yes folks, winter is here. I know I keep going on about the weather but spending so much time at the racecourse bad weather really pisses me off. I mean its the middle of august & its freezing. I am off to Folkestone fully dressed in ski gear! soldiering on without complaint
I am going to be adventurous to-day & choose Peeping Fawn at York for the Bismarck. This horse is going to be an odds on favourite to-day as its won its last 3 races very impressively. But horses are not machines & Peeping Fawn has had a long hard season. so I oppose the 3 times winner with a small stake. The other short price favourite to-day is ridden by Ryan Moore & I think he is the best jockey about.

BISMARCK IS SUNK

Last night the Bismarcks roll came to a temporary end with a brilliant win by Ryan Moore. He is definitely the best jockey about at the moment. He won well yesterday.
Last night Windsor was freezing. I had two overcoats on & was still cold.
To-day the Bismarck is Yellowstone in the 2.35 at york. It was a lucky winner 3 weeks ago at Goodwood where the last horse Heron Bay only finished 4 lengths behind it. it won't be so lucky to-day.

MONDAYS BISMARCK

Morning all. Had a lovely day off yesterday. Four of us went to lunch at a lovely little restaurant in Whitstable called Wheelers. I know I said I would never eat oysters again but I just had to try a couple of their Guinness battered oysters, they were fabulous & I'm still alive. The day was lovely except for the typical British weather, rain & more rain.
I'll keep it short today so here is the Bismarck Kings Event in the 7.30 at Windsor. It is the short priced favourite & is ridden by one of my favourite jockeys, Ryan Moore. The only reason that its my Bismarck is that last week it should have won.

WELCOME ANY READERS FROM THE SUN

Welcome to any Sun readers who have found their way here through my column. Finally I managed to get my details right in print!
Chat rooms make me laugh & I really enjoy reading the crap written about me in them. anonymous anoraks put themselves up as bigshots but in reality would be frightened to face the people they are commenting about. Thank you Woodie for the video that you posted on youtube, It shows that I do actually smile sometimes & even when I'm paying out!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tsgjJkPlno
At 7.30 this morning when I spoke to the TV people it looked like Papal Bull was going to be my even money Bismarck but it drifted to 7/4 which is the wrong price in my opinion so I have switched to Royal Rock in the 3.35 at Newmarket. Let's hope my switch is correct & keep the Bismarck on a roll.
The weather is predicted bad for over the weekend & I am not looking forward to a damp night ay Lingfield. Some friends were supposed to be coming down to watch the Briefcase Blues Brothers but have cried off when rain was forecast. There is never enough cover at racetracks if the weather is bad. I have had a fair week but need the weather to play ball during the big meeting next week at York. I need the money!
i won't be posting to-morrow I am having another day off. Some friends are taking Marian & myself down to Whitstable for lunch. I can promise you now that I will not be having any oysters. Nothing in the world could make me eat one again. Oyster poisoning is the worst feeling in history. I won't say anymore about it but will leave it to your imagination.
Enjoy the weekend. I will be back here with the Bismarck on Monday

BISMARCK ON A ROLL

The conditions yesterday at Brighton were atrocious. Of the 12 bookmakers that turned up only 6 were brave enough to weather the elements & go out to bet, I was one of the brave ones who stood in the gales to give shops up & down the country prices to work on. It really gale force out there. The visibility was so bad that ATR only showed the last furlong of the last race. Mt neighbours from many years ago came to see me but I didn't recognise them because of the rain fogging up my glasses.
I'm off to Sandown this afternoon where the forecast is not much better. The only good thing about this weather is that sometimes it works in favour to the bookies as horses do not perform as predicted.
The Bismarck is on a roll at present & let hope for further success to-day with to-day Bismarck, Montrechet at Hamilton.

EAT MY WORDS

Yesterday I said I would eat my words if England survived the day, well they managed to scrape a draw so I guess I'd better start eating. I still think that they played rubbish & bored the pants off the spectators.

RESTED & READY

It's Monday morning & after my day off yesterday I am rested & ready for a busy week ahead. My sons birthday party went well except for a 10 minute downpour. All the family were there but showing my usual restraint I only drank water so the head is clear this morning.

Shergar Cup Day was a success for Ascot so I might have to take back my words & cheer it on. There was a crowd of 30,000 with a lot of families & it was enjoyed by all. The going was good & there was amusements & a band to entertain the crowd. It was not so successful for us bookmakers we lost on the day. a very smart man came up to me and asked my opinions about Ascot & its facilities. Being myself I didn't hold back & told him as I saw it especially my one about lack of toilet facilities. It's only after I saw his photo in yesterdays paper that I realised that I had been ranting at the new guvnor Charles Barnett. Well he obviously wanted a straight opinion when he asked me.

Later on I was at Lingfield. The sons had a good night there last week as you can see from the photo so I was there myself Sat to keep minds on the work! The crowd was good as usual. I don't know who the band was but I did not rate them. I thought even I could do better mind you I only heard them for about 8mins while I was packing up. maybe there is a new career opportunity for me a a tribute singer!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To-day I am going to watch the last day of the cricket & for once I am cheering on India. England is playing rubbish & is an embarrassment to be one of their most ardent supporters. As I write this England is 71-0 & have a target of 500. If they make it I will eat my words in the morning.

The Bismarck is on a roll at the moment & to-days Bismarck is Down the Brick in the last race at Windsor this evening. The last couple of Mondays at Windsor have been disappointing but hopefully good weather will bring a crowd out to-night,
The first wicket has just gone Strauss for 32 I don't know if I can bear to watch.

SHERGAR CUP DAY

Yesterday was a good day for bookmaking but a disaster for anyone travelling to meetings in the south. The M25 was chaos after an accident between Junction 4 & 5. Some drivers were stranded at Clackett Lane Services for up to 14 hours. A few horses never made it to Lingfield nor did some of the Tote staff. Consequently all the back roads to Lingfield were moving at a snails pace as racegoers tried to find a way through. Hopefully all is back to its normal pace (slow) on M25 to-day.
It's Shergar Cup day to-day at Ascot. This meeting features jockeys from all over the world racing in a knockout cup. Its more about the jockey than about the horse to-day so is not a favourite meeting with the punters as they try & run similar level horses against each other so hard to find a winner.
Yesterdays Bismarck was spot on the even priced favourite was beaten. To-days Bismarck is Don't Forget Faith in the 3.25 at Newmarket.
To-morrow I am having a well deserved day off. It is my son Joseph's birthday & he is having a party. I thought my partying days were over but Marian says there is plenty of life left in me!
Have a good weekend & I will be back on Monday with the Bismarck.

NOT ONE OF MY BETTER NIGHTS

I was at Folkestone yesterday evening but it was not one of my better nights. The weather was beautiful & a monster crowd but I was struck down with gastritis before racing began. The staff had to run the show as I spent the evening languishing on the rails suffering. Many years ago this was caused by my daily diet of 3 fried eggs, a huge steak & a bottle of whiskey! Not that I am a perfect specimen of health now! It's a good job that Zoe Bird wasn't judging the best dressed lady last night after her blooper on microphone last week at Windsor. She whispered to her colleague that she was going to judge on the same lines as Crufts & pat the winner on the head. So she was very embarrassed when she found out that the whole world had heard her.

Yesterdays Bismarck didn't run. They must have known it was going to get beaten & didn't bother. To-days Bismarck is Snoqualmia Boy in the 7.45 at Newmarket. To-night is concert night there with Ronan Keating performing. So enjoy if you are going.
To-morrow I have my usual column in The Sun so be sure to read it. I am back fighting fit to-day & ready for action.

THURSDAY

Earlier this week Betfair made a decision to cancel all betting on a tennis match that they thought was fixed. In to-days Racing Post Bruce Millington justifies their decision & supports them. I would like to imagine the reaction if a genuine bona fide bookmaker (like myself amongst many others) took the same decision after punters had placed their bets with him. That decision was a total disgrace but I suppose it affected their biggest rollers.
Sunny Brighton was packed yesterday but had poor results. Racing was nearly delayed after the lorry carrying the staring stalls broke down on the M23. That is the state of racing, courses can't afford their own stalls so they shuffle them around the country.
The Bismarck won yesterday for the second day on the trot. My prediction will be on better form to-day & the Bismarck is Rinterval in the 7.10 at Folkestone where I will be attending.

HARD TO FIND

Apologies again to to anyone who has struggled to find their way to my blog. The wrong address was printed in my column in the Sun last week. ATR has had a meeting & are going to link to my blog. Also it has been getting mention in some Racing chat rooms. I am appearing on ATR this afternoon from Brighton with my pal THE LUMP OF LARD! Patrick lives near Brighton & is covering Kempton, I live in Essex & am schlepping to Brighton: makes perfect sense. To-morrow I will be at Folkestone & Patrick at Brighton. I am looking forward to that. These seaside meeting can be great if the weather is good the turnout is usually good too.
In the old days Brighton used to be a 3 day meeting. It was a Big Festival & popular with London Holidaymakers. Now it has been reduced to 2 days. As I said last week Brighton Hotels are a bit hit & miss.
I got the Bismarck wrong yesterday but even I can't be right all the time! The Bismarck to-day is Caravell in the 5pm at Brighton, even though its one of the great Sir Mark Prescott's horses. Titles mean nothing to me unless there is a chance that I might be in line for one (fat chance!)

MONDAY MORNING

Theoretically I should be full of energy as yesterday was supposed to be my day off but life never goes as planned. I was in the shop until late yesterday evening & went home exhausted early evening.
To-night is Windsor. So far this year Windsor has not lived up to expectations.Normally Windsor is the Chavs playground & is full of them giving it large. i don't know if its the weather or pay cuts in the City but crowds have been disappointing. Hopefully the sunshine will bring them out to-night. The week ahead is looking busy with double meetings throughout. I suppose I shouldn't moan but at my splendid age of 68 I think I'm allowed to!
Interestingly enough in to-days papers Goodwood have reported that their clampdown on Ticket Touts last week was extremely successful. Well they must have been monitoring a different gate to the one I was using. I saw plenty of uniformed police chatting to the regular Touts while they bought & sold tickets. Don't get me wrong I am all in favour of the Touts. They are doing a public service. My sister Jackie turned up there last week without a ticket & bought one from a Tout at only £2 over face value (cheaper than the booking fee from a ticket agency)
To-days BISMARCK is Knockmoy in the 7.30 at Windsor.

THE END OF A HARD WEEK

Good morning, to-day is the last day of our stay away from home. I will be glad to wake up in my own bed in the morning. No matter how nice being away is there is no place like home. The B&B in Stenning has been far better than the other gaff. I have only two complaints late breakfast(no staff turned up until 8am) and more importantly no Racing Post. Marian being a star rushed out to the village shop to buy me one but when she got there she discovered that she had left her purse in the room. No she didn't nick it but got credit & has now gone back to settle her bill!
Our good Bismarck run came to an end yesterday with a good ride from Jimmy Quinn. The trouble that I had anticipated in the race did happen but it was behind him so he had a good clear run. It was frightening to see the horses & jockeys tumble down but I am glad to report that all are well & unhurt.

It Has been a great week for racing. There were monster crowds at Goodwood & a fantastic atmosphere. That's what racing needs. I feel exhausted. I am having a night off from Lingfield. The Yuppie sons (Patrick & Danny) will be representing the firm there. I am off to Nick's wedding reception. His Dad Roy was my Best Man in 1964. ( A hell of a long time ago!)

If any of you are staying up for the boxing to-night I need Diaz to get beaten. Let's hope I wake up to good news! Otherwise my Bismarck to-day is Mandesha in the 3.20 at Goodwood for no other reason than it's French!

GOODWOOD FRIDAY

Well we are on a roll with the Bismarck this week. My prediction for to-day is Thirdset in the 3.30 at Goodwood. Lets hope I am right again.
The power of television is fantastic. My sister Jackie came to Goodwood yesterday an even at her age she wanted to stang on he joint while I was being interviewed so she could get her face on TV!
At last we have moved out of the dump that we were staying in! We are now in a lovely locally run B&B in Stenning. This morning I had my full English & feel ready for a great day. Yesterday at the other gaff we only ordered two coffees but the managed to get it wrong & brought a tea & coffee instead. Good job I didn't order anything fancy, I could still be there waiting now.

Glorious Goodwood has been a terrific success so far. Its a sure sign that bookmakers are doing well when they talk to each other & at the moment You cant get a word in.Everyone is chatting, buying each other coffees & generally being nice. Normally its a grumpy nod to each other at best.

The Yuppie sons have been working at Kempton & Sandown for the last couple of days but to-day our firm is back to full strength, ready for a bumper day.

My Bismarck is going to be on here daily so make sure to log on.

GOODWOOD THURSDAY

Good morning from a very happy bookie. I am sitting on my balcony overlooking the beach at Brighton contemplating the events of yesterday. It couldn't have gone better. The course was buzzing, plenty of punters with money to spend & not afraid to have a good time. For a change the bookies came out first. Contrary to belief this is not a regular event so there is cause for celebration!
Unfortunately my bismarck got beaten, well it's hard to be right all the time! The only other downside is the car park chaos that now reigns at a lot of courses & Goodwood is no exception. For some reason (financial I suppose) they acquire plots of land near racecourses & stick a few marshals on the road in orange jackets to direct the unsuspecting public into theses fields & then charge £10 a car. Little do they know that they then have a long hike to even see the track. It is an outrage.

The firm was spread a bit thin as we were covering two meetings. Phil & myself worked at Goodwood and the youngsters (Pat & Danny) went off to Kempton. Marian spent the day looking after the grandchildren, so I thought I would take her to what used to be my favourite Brighton restaurant Donatello's. Not any longer! My piece of veal looked about the size of a rasher of bacon & I swear it was thin enough to see through. So I filled up on garlic bread. Beware the breath to-day!

My Bismarck to-day is Geordieland running in the 3.25pm at Goodwood.

GOODWOOD WEDNESDAY

The weather was glorious yesterday & Goodwood lived up to expectations. Last night Marian & I went out to dinner with Andy Stewart & his family. Their horse Fleeting Spirit won the 4.00pm yesterday. They own upwards of 20 jump horses but only have 2 flat horses. To-day they are flying to Ireland for racing at Galway. Their horse Hoolabaloo is running in the Galway Plate 3.40pm. & then flying back to Goodwood for to-morrows racing & then on to Newmarket on Friday. How the rich & famous live! Poor Barry is stood on course trying to earn a living. Marian & I are slumming it in theGrand Hotel. Its a 5* hotel with 2* rooms & facilities! Let's hope the weather holds out so I can recoup some of yesterdays losses.

At least yesterdays Bismarck was correct. The Bismarck to-day is Excellent Art in the 3.30pm. Off now for another hard day at the races.

OFF TO GLORIOUS GOODWOOD

Hi Folks
Sorry about the lack of posts this week, but I have been murderously busy running from track to track( mostly on that famous car park known as the M25) it took me nearly four hours to do the 60 mile journey to Ascot. The Racing Board haven't made life any easier either. They have increased the number of meetings from 250 to 459 which is a bit hard for a nearly 70 year old veteran. I guess I will have to let the Yuppie sons do more of the work.

While I am on the subject of Royal Ascot all I have to say is urinals or should I say lack of them. The are 10 urinals on the concourse level. Considering that most of the punters are men that is no way near enough1 You expect women to be queuing out the door of the ladies but last week was the first time I say men queuing!

Well at last summer has nearly arrived & weather for GLORIOUS GOODWOOD looks promising. I am on my way down there as this is being written. Thank heaven for modern inventions. The secretary is back on board after the mistakes in the earlier postings. I expect a bumper turnout this week & a great time to be had by all. Marian has been away at a wedding & left me to look after myself so her reward for that is joining me down here at a very swanky hotel in Brighton. What a lovely husband I am!

Anyway more to the point my BISMARCK for to-day is Aqaleem running in the 14.50. i will try & post my Bismarck daily this week so log on & check it out.

Another week gone

Lets have a catch up, its Monday morning 10am. Been all over the place dodging the rainstorms this week, Sandown, Folkestone, Kempton & Lingfield. The only place it didn't rain was Lingers as I had predicted on The Morning Line. There was a big crowd, nearly 10,000 I am told, Plenty of bloody women betting 50p each way but as most of them were dressed up to kill I let it go & gave only little abuse. Apparently Jason Donovan was a blast but I was already on my way home when he started. I believe the SP on winner I have a dream has been sent out wrong at 9/2, it was at least 12/1 on mine & several other boards, I'll be looking into it!

Tough week this week the weather looks bad again and my family including Patrick are out camping [under canvas in a field]. I carry on regardless.

Had a smashing Sunday made a surprise visit to my 86 year old Mum early doors [she has just had a hip operation] called in at Chelmsford on some longstanding friends Pat & Vince at 11am They were still in bed don't know what they could be doing at 60 still in bed but they insisted on cracking a bottle of champagne with Maz & myself. Bach home 1pm , went out to eat with friends Ricky & Suzy. We went to the best Chinese in England, Chans in Manor Park. They serve real chinese the same as it was when I went there fifty years ago. Somehow six bottles of Wan Fu appeared an the bill [not guilt I was driving]
To-night is Windsor, I have just got off the phone from speaking to Gemma [the 26year odl c.o.c] at this stage it goes ahead. Lets hope she hasn't made a blunder this week. Last week she said that going was firm but the jockeys disagreed & said it was soft? The weather needs to improve for next week. GLORIOUS GOODWOOD is not the same in the rain.

Will catch up whenever. bet with Barry on http://barrydennis.co.uk

In the office

Not a lot to report. I thought I would post a picture of me hard at work in the office. This is the nerve centre of operations & I spend a lot of time in here.
I'm not looking forward to the atrocious weather forecasted for the weekend.

Day 1 The New Begining
Don't blame me if this goes wrong! blame Suzy. This is my new hobby hope you enjoy or get offended or whatever. This is an insight into the real Barry Dennis warts & all. After much persuading I have decided to embrace the internet wholeheartedly and give blogging a go.To-day should have been Brighton and Kempton but at the moment Philip the clerk is too exhausted after Ascot last Saturday. Nomber 1 son Patrick has been called to his bleeding kids sportdays, I tell everybody DON'T HAVE KIDS! The only reason I've got four is that in the sixties we got 7s 6d per week family allowance and that amounted to £1.50 modern money to give me some betting money or go up the billiard hall to play snooker.Off to Brighton now I've got an appointment with The Lump of Lard. My Bismarck on ATR later will be Ten on line. The schedule is murderous this week so will post again to-morrow.If you think I look slimmer the aga is broke so no food this week! Will update on the kitchen situation later after the service geezer has been. Suppose it will be another arm & a leg so bet with me later. I NEED THE MONEY http://barrydennis.co.uk/
